Information for Doctors

Since 2017 Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP) have been meeting with the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) to develop closer working relationships. ICP assured the ICGP that it requires members to attain the highest level of academic and clinical qualification. All ICP members must have completed a recognised post-graduate clinical and academic training programme of four years duration, commensurate with the requirements of ICP and the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP), bringing the total training requirement to 7 years.

Who Are Our Clients?

The patients you can refer to us typically suffer from psychological difficulties that require more time: anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders/problems, panic disorders, bereavement, and relationship difficulties.

GP/Therapist Liaison

Patient-therapist sessions are confidential, but we understand that you as a GP have a responsibility for the overall care of patients and would welcome feedback on the progress of the treatment. In addition, it may be important to liaise more closely with you in certain cases, such as when there is a psychiatric illness, where self-harm or suicide becomes a feature, or in certain cases of eating disorders in which medical management is important. Where necessary, we will put in place appropriate lines of communication to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.

We are available to discuss any potential client with you or your colleagues, confidentially, prior to referral, to ensure the optimum course of treatment.

Lumina therapists are members of professional bodies, such as:

Irish Council for Psychotherapy, Family Therapy Association of Ireland, Irish Forum for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, Irish Forum for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Play Therapy Ireland, Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland, Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists and comply with their codes of ethics.
