Catherine Vanier will present a clinical seminar in the morning on her work at the neonatal resuscitation unit at Delafontaine Hospital in Saint-Denis, Paris. She will show excerpts from the remarkable film made about her work there. In the afternoon Alain Vanier will make some theoretical remarks about the work in his presentation. “Beginning with some remarks about the clinical experience of a psychoanalyst in a child intensive care unit, and showing some sequences of a film being made in the unit, we will try to see how today we can psychoanalytically approach the effects of premature birth on the baby and his family. To understand the psychological complications of neonatal resuscitation, which is often a long and difficult process, we first have to try to see how a baby’s psyche is constituted. We ask: what about the mother-child bond in those cases? What is the place of the child in the parental fantasy and what are the effects of hospitalization on the child at the beginning of his/her life? Working also with the medical-staff, we will see how anxiety-producing are those resuscitations. The doctors also realize that each body, inscribed in a different speech, is different; that their knowledge, which concerns the organic body in general, clashes against the truth of the particular body of each one of us. Technology here often encounters its own limits and in certain cases, the child’s reaction to treatment escapes all logic. However, the doctor’s role is important because we will see how the caring gestures and words that accompany the baby can give him a sense of existence.”
